Milky Way

Curator's Notes

This piece depicts the connection between mother and child. Through nurturing, life-giving love, a bond is fostered that is greater than all the stars.

Each symbol takes inspiration from this love with metaphors from the Milky Way.

Moon + Stars: Representing those individual little moments and exchanges that when viewed as a whole, make up something far greater and and supremely powerful.

Sun + Moon: Together they symbolize an enduring, sustaining, continuous, eternal, day and night, forever-kind-of-love.

Spiral: The Milky Way swirl that fills our sky. In Greek, the name is galaxias kyklos which means "milky circle". Representing the life giving and bonding activity of feeding a child. The spiral shape also symbolizes a winding journey of growth. From something small and tightly wrapped, leading out to endless opportunity and growth.

Archway: This symbol represents home. The safe space wherever mother and child are together. Protective, safe and nurturing.

Connecting circles + wave: The larger circle or sun, represents the mother. Connecting to her younger through a wave of nurturing, love, connection, sustenance and life. The child, tucked within its "home" shape is connected to its mother, also representing the journey from the womb and the physical connection which grows into relational.

Tip for Collectors

One of the reasons we love Octavia's prints is that each is unique. Most are small edition, hand signed, numbered, and stamped pieces. Given that most are also printed on French cotton paper, the ink adheres such that it's hard to decipher prints from originals. (View product details above for more info on edition number, materials, etc.).
