Artsy Things to Do This Fall
Looking for art? Want to learn more about art? Want fun artsy activities? Some of the best art events are held in September and October. Here’s a roundup of some of our favorites.
Brimfield Flea (September 3-8): We’ve shared this one before, but Brimfield Flea is one of the largest destinations for vintage art and antiques in the US. About three hours from NYC and 1.5 hours from Boston, this massive collection of antique shows is a great fall day trip and a fantastic opportunity to find some affordable treasures.

Join a Young Patrons Group: Many museums across the US run cultural groups for folks under 40. These groups typically include exclusive social events, exhibit tours, and other opportunities to learn about art and meet cool people. Memberships are not always cheap (generally about $500-$1,000), but they’re often tax deductible, so be sure to look into that as an option. A few of the better known programs include MOMA Young Patrons in NYC and LACMA Avant-Garde in LA. Most of these young patron groups offer programming all year long, but the fall is generally one of the most active times of the year.
Attend an Estate Sale: Estate sales are a great source for treasures that won’t break the bank. Normal.nyc (which also hosts events outside of NYC) is definitely worth following. We also recently discovered Sylviehome, which hauls antiques from Europe, so you don’t have to.
View the 16-Foot Pigeon in NYC: Iván Argote’s “Dinosaur” will be making its debut on the High Line to inspire “attraction, seduction, and fear.”

Art on Paper (September 5-8): Most of the art is a bit pricier than you’d typically see on Wallace, but Art on Paper includes 100 galleries featuring contemporary paper-based art. The NYC show is in September, but they have shows in cities throughout the country at other points during the year. Art at many fairs is financially out of reach for a lot of us. But these fairs can still be a good way to learn more about what you like.
Independent 20th Century (September 5-8): The Independent 20th Century art fair champions artists and international avant garde movements that took place between 1900-2000. Like Art on Paper, much of the art is pricier than what you’d find on Wallace, but it’s still fun to attend. DM us or email wallace@wallaceart.co, and we’ll get you free tickets (limited number available).
Gowanus Open Studios (October 19-20): Home to warehouses and factories, Gowanus, Brooklyn is a diverse creative community and a great spot to visit artist studios. Bushwick also has an open studios event, but we’ve heard it’s a bit less consistent.
